The hotel is located on the edge of the village of Frederiksoord, which was founded in 1818 by an organization called the Maatschappij van Weldadigheid (Society of Benevolence). The society bought unused land in the Drenthe region and converted it into farming colonies for families left impoverished by the French occupation. In Frederiksoord you can visit the mansion and horticultural gardens of the Westerbeek Sloot estate, the headquarters of the Society of Benevolence. The history of the farming colonies is explored in the Museum De Koloniehof. From the Hotel Frederiksoord it’s approx. 10.5 km/6.5 miles to Drents-Friese Wold National Park, which has many biking paths, and 20.7 km/12.9 miles to Dwingelderveld National Park.
